Maceration Help Please!!
« on: October 30, 2011, 01:24:22 PM »
So  as the story goes I decided  I would try my hand at a euro mount and would go through Michelle's maceration process as it was posted here. The skull has been in the water since the 1st of this month, after about the 1st week not too much meat came off but I got off what i could rinsed it and dumped 2/3 water and replaced with warm as the info said. The 2nd week I did the same and had great results most of the outer membrane on top and the eyes came off as well as the upper palate. Week 3 I didnt have much time to pick at it so i just changed some water. Now onto yesterday which would be week 4, I was picking at it and I didnt seem to be able to make much progress and the flesh didnt look like it changed much the last 2 weeks. Water temp has been above 80 even on the coldest nights and I keep the water at a steady level. So I decided to dump all the water and give the skull a good rinse and throw some fresh beef bones with fresh meat on them that and new water to try and start the bacterial growth over again.

My main concern is I want to get this done before Christmas If possible so I want to get it done as fast as possible but want to do this right. I am not willing to risk quality for speed so if it cant be done by then oh well. But am I missing anything crucial to making this go smoothly??? Experienced help would be awesome! thanks everyone!

I dont do the warm water process, I just stick it in a rubbermaid container thats just big enough for the skull to fit in and fill it up to the bottom of the eye sockets and slide it into a garbage bag and tie the bag above the bases, always leave the same water in there dont change it and check it every once in a while and add a little water if needed and then just let the bugs do there job.

All my skull are around 90 degrees and I only change the water once through the process. You want the bacteria to do the work. Did you try to clean most of the meat off. The process should only take a month doing it like  Michelle's does. Any questions give me a call

I need to do some minor updated to that Maceration Thread as I have made a few changes in my process.

shadowless_nite,  Did you remove as much meat as you could and the eye's before putting it in the water?  I can get a Deer Skull completely meat free and ready for the degreaser in 7 days.

I also had the same problem doing the maceration process this year.......The meat would not come completely off. So is what I did to speed things up is, I emptied the water out of the five gallon bucket that the skull was sitting in and I boiled up some water In pot. Then I took the boiled water and filled the bucket with the skull in it. Almost instantly the skin shriveled up and peeled right off. None of the teeth fell out or cracked and none of the inner nasal bones came out. Next all you have too do is degrease the skull. Good luck.

yes i got most the meat off before putting it in. the only meat giving me trouble is just on the rear portion where it connects to the vertebre. Its all the meat and membrane on the back that is stuck in the crevices and what not that doesnt want to budge. All the eye socket and pretty much all the nasal meat is out. Its just this last bit on the rear portions, Ill try and snap a picture for better reference tomorrow.
